Lapel cross country with strong showing in Shelbyville

SHELBYVILLE–The Lapel cross country teams tested themselves against a large field of teams Saturday at the Southwestern Small School Invitational. Both the boys and the girls distinguished themselves nicely.

The Lapel boys’ team placed second behind the runner-up individual finish of sophomore Luke Combs while the girls placed third in the team competition with three runners placing in the top-30.

In the boys’ race, there were 151 runners from 17 schools and on the girls’ side, there were 124 runners hailing from 15 schools.

Combs ran the 5K event in 16:04.10, less than three seconds off the pace of winner Mitchell Rans of Caston. Fellow sophomores Jesse McCurdy placed eighth and Carson Huber placed 22nd.

As a team, Lapel was six points behind Oak Hill for first, but 74 points ahead of Springs Valley, who finished in third place.

Oak Hill also dominated the girls’ race, placing four runners in the top 10. Junior Noelle Loller was the top Bulldog, placing 20th in a time of 22:57.86. Junior Lauren Smith was 22nd and junior Kara Lutz was close behind in 27th.

The Bulldogs will participate in the Pendleton Heights Roundup, held Wednesday at 6 p.m.
