Marion edges PHHS in penalty riddled game

PENDLETON–In a game marred by multiple yellow cards and ejected fans, the Pendleton Heights soccer team failed to cash in on early scoring opportunities and were shut out for the second straight game, 1-0 by Marion Thursday evening.

The game was scoreless until Jonas Reed scored the only goal of the game at the 33:19 mark of the second half.

The Arabians had plenty of chances early. Thomas Quiroga, Abe Bohlsen, Brennan Jones, and Ethan Schitter had open looks that just missed their mark.

“We dominated possession, we outshot them, and we had more opportunities than them,” coach Kyle Davy said. “It hurts. They’ve got a great goalkeeper in net. We’ve got to learn to execute, we had some chances inside the six-yard box.”

After Marion took the lead, a yellow card on Schitter set off a series of penalties that resulted in four more yellow cards between the two teams, another negated by an offsides call, and the ejection of several fans of both teams after Arabian and Giant players had to be separated on the sideline near the bleachers.

“It’s a 1-0 game, we’re battling to get back in it and they’re battling to hold the lead,” Davy said. “There’s a lot of high school testosterone building up, things got a little escalated. We gathered ourselves and tried to get the win, we didn’t buckle under the pressure.”

The last chance the Arabians had to even things up came at the six minute mark. Marion goalie Caleb Oliver bobbled a save opportunity and just gathered control before Quiroga could get to the ball, securing the Giant win.

Despite the loss, the Arabians actually improved to 3-2 on the season. Prior to the game, it was announced that Hamilton Southeastern would have to forfeit its 8-0 win over Pendleton Heights earlier in the season.

“The email I got said that they had played some ineligible players,” Davy said.

The Arabians will open conference play Tuesday evening when they travel to Greenfield Central for a 7 p.m. match.
