Madison County voters select primary candidates

MADISON COUNTY — Madison County voters took to the voting booths in the primary election Tuesday, May 8, to select candidates for the fall General Election. 

Of 89,930 registered voters in the county, 20,730 cast ballots, a 23.05 percent turnout. 

The following are local results from contested races:

Adams Township Trustee — Republican Incumbent Jill Fesler defeated James Aschemeier. Fesler captured 77.25 percent of vote (309) Aschemeier received 22.75 percent of the vote (91). 

Clerk of the Circuit Court — Democrat Lindsey Pancol Madinger faced Joe Spencer for the right to take on Republican Olivia Pratt in the fall. Pancol Madinger earned 5,613 votes (60.89 percent) while Spencer got 3,605 votes (39.11 percent). 

Madison Co Recorder  Democrat Kristy Douglas took on Barbara J. Joy in what turned out to be one of the tightest races of the night for the right to take on incumbent Republican Linda Smith in the fall. Douglas won with 4,377 votes (51.43 percent). Joy captured 4,133 votes (48.57 percent). 

Judge of the Circuit Court Div. 3  On the Democratic ticket, Rosemary Khoury took on NiCale Rector. Khoury captured 5,072 votes (52.48 percent), while Rector garnered 4,593 votes (47.52 percent).

On the Republican ticket, Andrew Hopper defeated Scott A. Norrick by a vote of 6,619 (66.09 percent) to 3,396 (33.91 percent)

County Council – District 1  On the Republican ticket, Jerry Alexander went up against Brandon D. Sanders and Megan E. Stoner for the right to face Democrat Clayton Whitson in the fall. Alexander came out on top with 1,422 votes (49.96 percent). Stoner captured 838 votes (29.44 percent), while Sanders got 586 votes (20.59 percent).

Statewide results

Republican

U.S. Senator —Mike Braun won the Republican nomination against Todd Rokita and Luke Messer. In Madison County, Braun received 3,929 votes (39.48 percent); Messer received 3,159 votes (31.74 percent; and Rokita received 2,865 votes (28.79 percent). Braun will face Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly in the General Election.

State Senator District 26 — Mike Gaskill defeated Steffanie Owens. In Madison County, Gaskill received 4,109 votets (57.63 percent) and Owens received 3,021 votes (42.37 percent). Gaskill will face Democrat Dave Cravens in the fall.

Democratic

U.S. Representative 5th District — Dee Thornton won the Democratic nomination for , against Kyle Moore, Dion Douglas, Eshel Feraggi and Sean Dugdale. In Madison County, Thornton received 3,343 votes (41.52 percent). Moore received 2,862 votes (35.54 percent), Douglas received 937 voted (11.64 percent), Faraggi 500 (6.2 percent) and Dugdale 410 (5 percent). Thornton will face Republican incumbent Susan Brooks in the General Election.

State Senator District 25 — Incumbent Tim Lanane defeated challenger Tamala Dixon-Tatum. In Madison County, Lanane received 2,640 votes (64.06 percent), while Dixon-Tatum received 1,481 votes (35.94 percent). Lanane will face Republican challenger Zaki Ali in the General Election.

State Senator District 26 — Dave Cravens defeated Dave Ring. In Madison County, Cravens received 3,797 votes (74.13 percent), while Ring received 1,325 votes (25.87 percent). Cravens will face Republican Mike Gaskill in the fall.

State Representative District 36 — Incumbent Terri Jo Austin defeated challenger Rebecca Crumes. In Madison County, Austin received 3,809 votes (69.28 percent), while Crumes received 1,689 votes (30.72 percent).

Precinct Committeeman 4-4 – Results: On the Democratic ballot, it was William Douglas Horton going up against Lisa Redding. Redding was the big winner with 82.20 percent of the vote capturing 157 votes while Horton got 17.80 percent of the vote with 34 votes.    

Precinct Committeeman Green Township 4 – Results: On the democratic ticket, Todd Catron and Georgia Parker were seeking the winning seat. Catron got 47 votes 63.51 percent of the vote while Parker had 27 votes or 36.49 percent of the vote. 

Precinct Committeeman Pipe Creek Township 2 – Results: On the democratic side, Holly Davis and Danielle Dunnichay-Noone battled it out. Dunnichay-Noone got 63 votes or 75.90 percent while Davis got 20 votes, 24.10 percent.

Van Buren Township Trustee – Results: On the republican ticket, incumbent Jessica Berner went up against, Dee Amos and Ralph Gordon. Amos was the winner with 73 votes or 46.20 percent. Gordon came in second with 47 votes, 29.75 percent while Berner, the incumbent finished third 38 votes, 24.05 percent.

Pipe Creek Township Trustee – Results: On the democratic ticket, incumbent Patrick Hoose took on Marian L Dunnichay. Dunnichay was the winning getting 754 votes, 64.01 percent of the vote, while Hoose got 424 votes, 35.99 percent.
