Art group adds to camp offerings

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Artists Society plans an expanded art camp this summer at Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Kids Art Camp at PAS — Pendleton Artists Society is accepting registrations for its Kids Art Camp. Children can learn and create various art projects using a variety of media.

The classes will take place from July 16-20 and cost $50 per child. Cost for each additional immediate sibling is $45. Students ages 6 to 12 may register for either morning or afternoon classes.

The morning class is from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon class is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Children 13 and older may register for the 5:30 to 8 p.m. class.

New this year will be a metalsmithing and enameling workshop for ages 13 and older.

The class will make copper boxes with a focus on stamping, texturing, piercing with jewelry saw, stone setting, wire wrapping and lacing, and enameling with powdered glass and kiln.

Participants will design their own style. All tools and supplies will be furnished. This class is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 16 to 20 and will be limited to 12 students.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

Facial pain group to meet

PENDLETON — Facial Pain Association Trigeminal Neuralgia Group will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Trinity Life Center, 5900 South State Road 13, Pendleton.

There will be a live webinar with Dr. Michael Pasternak, a trustee of the Facial Pain Research Foundation.

He will speak about ongoing research and the progress toward finding a cure for trigeminal neuralgia. People will be able to ask him questions.

TN is a facial disorder often cause by compression of the trigeminial nerve, the largest cranial nerve.

Symptoms are sudden a burning, stabbing, shock-like facial pain.

Heavy trash day set for May 23

LAPEL — Lapel heavy trash pick-up day is Wednesday, May 23.

Heavy and bulk items placed at the curb in an orderly fashion will be picked up starting at 6 a.m. Smaller, loose material must be in trash bags or containers.

Typical household heavy/bulk items that will be collected include:

• Lamps, fans and blinds

• Lawn furniture, gardening tools

• Children’s toys

• Hot water heaters, microwaves

• Household furniture (no sofas more than 80 inches wide and no hide-a-bed/sleeper sofas)

• Mattresses (must be wrapped in plastic and duct tape); queen size or smaller, and box springs and bed frames.

• Rugs must be rolled and tied (no larger than 8 by 10 feet)

• Bikes

• Extra bagged trash

• Other acceptable items that will not require more than one person to lift because of weight or size of the item

Appliances — refrigerators and freezers must be tagged by a licensed technician showing freon has been removed. Any item that cannot be lifted by one individual due to weight and or size will not be taken.

Other material/items that cannot be taken include construction debris, remodeling material (carpet, roofing material, wood, insulation, plumbing materials, concrete, bricks and drywall), liquid material, hazardous materials, tires, tenant household move-outs and loose trash that could be bagged for service.

History center offers genealogy classes

ANDERSON — The genealogy department at Madison County History Center is offering a series of genealogy-related classes running through Aug. 13.

Classes include “Land Records,” June 11; “Census,” July 9 and “Computer/Websites,” Aug. 13.

Classes start at 12:30 p.m. in the Bowman Room at the history center, 11 W. 11th St., Anderson.

There is no charge.

United Way seeks volunteers

MADISON COUNTY — United Way of Madison County has scheduled training for volunteers interested in learning how to set up and run a disaster volunteer reception center.

This training will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Aletheia Fellowship & Ministry Center, 2505 Faith Drive, Anderson.

The training will teach participants how to handle volunteer registration, logistics and communications to keep recovery efforts organized.

Optimists golf outing set for June 9

LAPEL — Optimist Golf Tournament of Champions is scheduled for June 9 at Edgewood Golf and Event Center, 519 Golf Club Road, Anderson.

The Lapel Optimist Club event — which supports local youth sports, including football, basketball and volleyball — has a 2 p.m. shotgun start.

Youth soccer camp sign-up open

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Heights Youth Soccer Camp for boys and girls in first through eighth grades is open for sign-ups.

The camp will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, through Thursday, June 21, at the Pendleton Heights Soccer Fields, One Arabian Drive.

Cost is $50, which includes a T-shirt and four days of age-appropriate training led by the high school coaches and high school players.

School registration under way

PENDLETON — Registration for the 2018-19 school year is under way in the South Madison Community School Corp.

Parents and guardians are required to register their student for school.

Group offers glimpses at past

ANDERSON — Madison County Historical Society Inc., 15 W. 11th St., features a living room scene from the past, where visitors can see how an earlier generation lived.

There also is a dental office and general store, where people can see things they might have heard about but not seen.

The historical society is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
