Lapel Bulldogs baseball team drops one on final play against Knightstown

LAPEL — It’s not over, until it’s over.

The Lapel High School baseball team learned the lesson the hard way, dropping one in the final at bat to Knightstown 8-7 Saturday, May 12.

The game was tied at seven with Knightstown batting in the bottom of the seventh, when Jack Fort singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, ending the game.

The Lapel Bulldogs collected 12 hits in the high-scoring affair. Knightstown had 11 hits on the way to victory.

Knightstown got things moving in the first inning, when Connor Gill’s wild pitch allowed one run to score for Knightstown.

The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third inning, thanks to a home run by Ryne Wheeler.

Matthew Craft earned the victory on the mound for Knightstown. He went one inning, allowing two runs on one hit and walking one.

Satchell Wilson took the loss for the Bulldogs. He went one-third of an inning, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out one and walking zero.

Gill started the game for Lapel. He lasted five and a third innings, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out seven. Kaunner Cleek started the game for Knightstown. He went six innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits and striking out 14

Lapel tallied one home run on the day, when Wheeler put one out in the third inning.

The Bulldogs racked up 12 hits in the game.

Scoring for Lapel were Colton Shirley with two, and Cannon Bledsoe, Ross Hagen, Cameron Holycross, Satchell Wilson and Ryne Wheeler each with one.

Lapel lost to New Castle 7-3 on Monday, May 14. Scoring for Lapel were Mason Gilley with two and Wilson with one.

Lapel was scheduled to play host to Pendleton Heights Tuesday, May 15 (after press time), before three road games: Anderson at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 16; Alexandria Monroe at 5 p.m. Friday, May 18, and Lawrence North at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19. The team is back home Monday, May 21, to face Elwood beginning at 7 p.m.
