Pendleton softball picks up wins, so does Lapel

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights softball team fell to Martinsville 5-4 in extra innings on Friday, May 11.

The non-conference road loss followed a stellar week in which the Arabians defeat Wapahani, Thursday, May 10, in a 15-0 blow-out. In the win, Jordan Benefiel didn’t allow a single run. She allowed one hit and collected 12 strikeouts.

Chloe Closser led the Arabians to victory by driving in five runs. She went 3-for-3 at the plate. Closser drove in runs on a grand slam in the third and a single in the sixth.

The Arabians tallied 18 hits in the game. Closser, Jayden Brown, Ally Hall, Lauren Landes, and Mikala Winans all racked up multiple hits for Pendleton Heights.

The Arabians beat Greenfield-Central 7-6 on Tuesday, May 8.

The game was tied at six, with the Arabians batting in the bottom of the fifth, when Amanda White hit a solo homer for Pendleton.

Kelsey Sturgeon led things off in the pitcher’s circle for the Arabians. She went one inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one. Maddie White and Amanda White toed the rubber for the Arabians in the second and fourth innings, respectively.

Pendleton Heights socked two home runs on the day. Amanda White put the game winner out in the fifth, and Sturgeon went for the long ball in the first.

The Arabians collected 11 hits, with Amanda White, Kylie Davis, Lauren Landes, and Sturgeon each managing multiple hits for the team.

Pendleton Heights was set to play at New Castle Tuesday, May 15, and Yorktown at home at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17.

LAPEL

The Lapel High School softball team split a doubleheader, absorbing an 11-7 loss and capturing a 4-0 shutout win over Shenandoah, Saturday, May 12.

In the win, the Lady Bulldogs picked up three runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the bottom of the fifth en route to the win.

Sophie Cline was 3-for-3 with three hits and two RBI and scored two runs. Taylor Murdock also had a good game, getting two hits and knocking in two runs. Kylie Rich had two hits and scored a run.

In the loss, the Raiders spread out 15 hits en route to beating Lapel, despite the Bulldogs jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first inning.

The Raiders answered with four runs in the third and added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh for the win.

Lapel’s Chloe Tucker had two hits and scored two runs in the loss. The team had nine hits in the game.

Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs dropped a 10-2 game to Delta on Thursday, May 9.

Lapel was set to play Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter on the road Tuesday, May 15, and play host to Eastern Hancock Thursday, May 17.
