Art group adds to camp offerings

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans several upcoming art classes as well as an expanded art camp this summer at Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Oil painting with Gini Deaton — 2 to 6 p.m. July 8. The subject will be a Bill Bayer design titled “Silent Sentinel.” Participants will paint this seascape with a lighthouse using a wet-on-wet technique. All supplies, including paint, brushes and canvas will be supplied. There will be a step-by-step demonstration on a large screen with individual coaching. All levels of painters are welcome. The cost for the class is $75.

• Oil painting with Katie Burke — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 (with a break for lunch). Participants will paint bluebirds on a stump with dogwoods. For students using their own paints and brushes, the cost for the class is $45. If supplies are provided, the cost will be $ 55.

• Kids Art Camp at PAS — Pendleton Artists Society is accepting registrations for its Kids Art Camp. Children can learn and create art projects using a variety of media.

The classes will take place from July 16 to 20 and cost $50 per child. Cost for each additional immediate sibling is $45. Students ages 6 to 12 may register for either morning or afternoon classes.

The morning class is from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon class is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Children 13 and older may register for the 5:30 to 8 p.m. class.

• New this year will be a metalsmithing and enameling workshop for ages 13 and older.

The class will make copper boxes with a focus on stamping, texturing, piercing with a jewelry saw, stone setting, wire wrapping and lacing, and enameling with powdered glass and kiln.

Participants will design their own style. All tools and supplies will be furnished. This class is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 16 to 20 and will be limited to 12 students.

A special program is set for Friday, July 20, during which all camp students will display their work done during the week.

A special guest professional enamelist will display works and talk about enameling.

Cost for the camp is $50 per child and $45 for each additional sibling.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

Swim lessons planned for pool

PENDLETON — The DiveIn! 2 Swim: Every Child Can Swim Initiative is planned for this summer at Alvin D. Brown Memorial Swimming Pool in Pendleton.

Children 4 and older who live in Fall Creek, Green, Adams or Stonybrook townships and whose families cannot afford to pay for lessons are eligible for free lessons with certified instructors this summer at the Pool in Pendleton.

Lessons are one hour per day — 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. — for one week, Monday to Friday.

The program is funded through community donations from individuals, businesses and organizations, such as the Open Heart Open Purses program at South Madison Community Foundation.

‘Friends’ seek duck race sponsors

PENDLETON — Friends of the Pendleton Community Public Library will be at the Fourth at the Falls event in Falls Park in Pendleton, registering entries for the fifth annual Lucky Duck Race.

People can adopt a rubber duck for $5.

The Lucky Duck Race is set for Sept. 8 during the Pendleton Heritage Fair.

After July 4, ducks will be available for adoption at the library and other sponsor and community events.

Proceeds support programs at the library.

Rad’s 5K coming up at Lapel High School

LAPEL — The Lapel Lions Club will play host to Rad’s Run and Roar at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Lapel High School.

This is a 5K that people can run or walk. All ages are welcome.

Rad’s Run and Roar is a memorial event for Conrad Hersberger, a lifelong resident of Lapel who lived with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) until his death in 2016.

Proceeds will benefit the CdLS Foundation.

Registration by June 29 costs $15; registration after June 29 costs $20. T-shirts are available for $10.

Registration forms are available at the Lapel Post Office and Ice Cream Plus.

Race day registration begins at 8 a.m.

Lapel Village Fair coming up

LAPEL — Lapel Village Fair is scheduled for July 13 and 14 in downtown Lapel.

On Friday, July 13, townwide rummage sales begin at 8 a.m., and food and craft booths open on Main Street at noon.

Other highlights that day include Knocker Ball at Daybreak Community Church and entertainment under the tent on Main Street from noon to 8 p.m.; a carnival for children ages 4 to 12 at Daybreak from 3 to 7 p.m.; Dan’s Fish Fry at Ford Street United Methodist Church from 4 to 7:30 p.m.; live music from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the corner of Main Street and Pendleton Avenue; and a street dance on Main Street from 9 to 11 p.m. with DJ Ryan Edwards.

On Saturday, July 14, craft and food booths on Main Street will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; townwide rummage sales begin at 8 a.m.; a run/walk sponsored by the Lions Club begins at 8:30 a.m. at Lapel high School (call Matt McClintick at 765-620-7070 for more details); car show at Daybreak from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (registration starts at 9 a.m., and proceeds benefit the local food pantry. Call Ken De La Bastide at 765-534-3462 for more details); hand-breaded tenderloins will be available on the patio at the Lapel American Legion from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; a “Build A Beard” craft table on the banquet side at the Lapel Eagles from noon to 3 p.m. A competition will begin at 5 p.m. with categories by age groups 0-3, 4-8, 9-12 and 13-17; music on the Lapel Eagles outside stage begins at 1 p.m. featuring The Stampede String Band, DreamMaker, Drew Hawk from the Tone Lab Society, and Thomas Wayne Pruitt; adult bean bag toss tournament at the Lapel Eagles, with registration from noon to 12:30 p.m. and the competition starting at 1 p.m. (people should bring their own partner, must be 18 or older) carnival for ages 4 to 12 at Daybreak from 1 to 8 p.m.; parade on Main Street begins at 3:30 p.m; free hot air balloon rides at Woodward Park from about 7:30 to 9 p.m.; free movie in Woodward Park begins at 9 p.m.

5K run/walk to help cancer cause

PENDLETON — The INCourage 5K and Kids Color Run/Walk is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Falls Park.

INCourage is a non-profit organization designed to provide financial support and build awareness for families in the community affected by childhood cancer.

The 5K run/walk course will start in Falls Park and proceed through trails along Falls Creek. There also will be a shorter children’s color run/walk for people 12 and younger.

Cost for the event ranges from $10 for the children’s color run to $30 for the 5k.
