PENDLETON — Cyclists will be riding through Pendleton as part of an event aimed at promoting good health and cancer prevention.

Heroes Crit & Fit Day is planned for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Falls Park.

It’s an all-day event created by the Heroes Foundation, which has as its goal cancer prevention.

There will be activities for all ages centered on healthy lifestyles and the sharing of educational materials.

There also will be a series of bike races throughout the day, bringing hundreds of riders to and through the Pendleton, event manager, Elizabeth Ellis said.

“There will be a race nearly every hour,” she said.

The USA cycling events takes place at Pendleton Falls Park, 200 W. Falls Park Drive, Pendleton.

The course runs clockwise with mostly right turns, a press release said.

The start and finish lines will be on Falls Creek Drive. Riders will turn right onto East Street, right onto East Water Street, then right onto N Pendleton Ave., then right onto Falls Creek Drive.

For cyclists interested in taking part, a USA cycling license is required. One-day licenses may be purchased for Category 5 racers the day of the event for $10.

There will be a children’s area near the playground, with a bounce house and other activities. Also, The Stable will have a beer garden, Greek’s Pizzeria will have a truck and Good’s Candy Shop will have ice cream.

Organizers arranged many activities for race-watchers to do, bringing together cancer research, prevention, education and some fun.

They said they’re pleased to partner with the Town of Pendleton and Community Hospital Anderson to offer this year’s event.

Part of the event involves free mammogram screening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through St. Vincent Mobile Mammography Unit, but preregistration is required. Those wishing to participate should call 317-338- 5434 in advance.

Organizers said 10 people must preregister for a mammogram screening for the mobile unit to show up.

The Heroes Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) public charity with the mission to provide support to cancer patients, education to promote cancer prevention and resources to advance research for a cure, according its website.

Its efforts are focused in the state of Indiana.

Organizers of the event still have many avenues for corporate and advocate participation in this year’s Crit & Fit Day.
