Time to bounce back

LAPEL — Lapel and Shenandoah have shared many hard-fought battles, but this year’s meet-up didn’t showcase the rivalry as in previous meetings. The Raiders showed why they are ranked No. 8 in Class 2A with a 52-7 defeat of the Bulldogs.

Neither the Bulldogs’ offense nor their defense could find a hold in the rain-drenched game.

Junior Cole Alexander, who has hundreds of yards in the air this season, managed just five completions and 36 yards.

Senior Drew Reed got to the end zone for the lone Bulldogs score in the final quarter.

Most of Lapel’s offense stayed on the ground as senior Sparky Manis carried the ball 16 times for 122 yards. Junior Josiah Scott garnered 48 yards on seven carries.

Raiders quarterback Peyton Starks threw for three touchdowns on short yardage and ran for one on a quarterback sneak. Most of Shenandoah’s points on the board were from the ground. The Raiders scored five rushing touchdowns and amassed 344 yards rushing.

Even in the sloppy weather, the Bulldogs hit hard with sophomore Tanner Mroz leading the team with five solo tackles.

The Bulldogs play host to Boonville at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, for Lapel’s homecoming game.

With a 4-0 record, the Pioneers will be another tough test for the Bulldogs. None of Boonville’s opponents has kept the team under 28 points.

While senior Boonville quarterback Jackson Phillips has 355 yards passing this season, his Bulldog rival Alexander has more than 700 yards through four games.

However, the Bulldogs will have to hold the Pioneers’ rushing game. Senior back Luke Conner has accumulated 626 yards, averaging 156 yards per game. He has scored 10 touchdowns for Boonville.

Another player to watch will be defensive back senior Ross Farmer, who has snagged three interceptions. As a wide receiver, Farmer has 119 yards receiving on just seven catches this year.

Saturday’s game has a 2 p.m. start time.
