Bulldogs edged by Lions in close contest

LAPEL — A big fourth quarter by the visiting Rushville Lions stopped Lapel from a tally in the win column with a 39-37 loss on Sept. 21.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter and still led 21-19 at the half, but the Lions scored 20 points in the fourth to pull out the win.

Once again, junior quarterback Cole Alexander went to the air for 310 passing yards while completing 19 of 31 and throwing four touchdowns. Alexander is edging closer and closer to 1,500 yards passing this season with just six interceptions total.

Sophomore Tanner Mroz scored two Bulldog touchdowns, while junior Noah Frazier caught one pass for a TD. Senior Justin Engle led the team in receiving with 148 yards on six catches and scored for Lapel.

Senior Sparky Manis crossed the goal line for the team’s only rushing touchdown.

In all, the Bulldogs managed to put down 467 yards of total offense for the game.

While they have lost four in a row, Lapel works this week to get a win at home Friday, Sept. 28, against Heritage Christian. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Eagles are 3-3 for the season after a 12-10 loss to Covenant Christian.

Senior Eagles quarterback Sam Azbell has thrown for more than 800 yards in six games.

His favorite target, with more than 500 yards receiving, is junior wide receiver Harrison Eckel.

Bulldog Alexander and the offensive line will have to contend with linebacker Ethan Lowry, who has three solo sacks this season and leads his team in tackles.
