LAPEL — Lapel High School marked Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 9, with a program that included thanks to veterans for their service, poems, music from the band and more.

Hundreds of students and some community members attended the convocation in the school auditorium, including a handful of local veterans in addition to several members of Lapel American Legion Post 212, who presented the colors.

Several staff members spoke to the crowd, stressing the sacrifices members of the armed forces make.

Teacher Kelly Huntzinger shared words about the history of Veterans Day.

Teacher Josh Strange read the poem “I am a veteran” by Andrea Brett, and sophomore Seth Schuck read a poem he composed.

The names of local military service members — separate lists for veterans, those who have recently served or are currently serving, and those who have been killed in action — were shown on a large screen above the stage in silence, with enough time for people to read through them.

Several times during the program there was applause for veterans of the various branches of service.
