Artists group offers classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans art classes regularly at Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Coffee and Paint with Diane Burrell — 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 30 and Dec. 14.

Participants will be encouraged to paint in their own style in acrylics. All level of painters are welcome.

Paints and brushes will be available for $10 per week for those who do not have their own. The cost is $15 per session.

• Oil Painting with Katy Burke — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5 (with a break for lunch). The painting will consist of a moonlit snow scene with redbirds. Class fee is $55 ($45 for people who bring their own brushes and paints).

Class is for all levels of painters.

• Oil painting with Gini Deaton — 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 9. Deaton will instruct how to paint “Dragonfly Lavender Dreams,” which will focus on a dragonfly with background. All materials are supplied for the painting. No drawing is required, and all levels of painters are welcome. Participants are asked to bring paper towels. Class fee is $55.

• Acrylic pour class with Brenda Jarrett — 2 to 5 p.m. Dec. 16. Jarrett will teach how to do flip and drag pours with added techniques to make an 11-by-14-inch acrylic pour artwork. Supplies will be provided. For ages 12 and older. Class fee is $35.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

People can register at the gallery during regular hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, or by phone at 765-778-0986.

Juried Art Show to open soon

The Pendleton Artists Society also plans to open its sixth annual juried art show on Dec 7.

There will be a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m., where the public may meet the artists, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and vote for the People’s Choice Award.

The exhibit will close on Jan. 2. The gallery will be closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1.

Santa breakfast benefits scholarship

PENDLETON — The 33rd Alpha Delta Kappa Santa Breakfast is set for 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Pendleton Heights Middle School cafeteria, 7450 S. County Road 300W.

The pancake breakfast will cost $3 for those 8 and younger and $5 for those 9 and older.

People will be able to buy portraits with Santa, handmade items by local ADK artists and tickets for a $200 Meijer gift card raffle.

Proceeds benefit the Alpha Delta Kappa Ruth Manifold Scholarship, awarded to a PHHS senior planning to pursue a career in education.

Markleville plans celebration, collection

MARKLEVILLE — Christmas in Markleville is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Hardy Building, 11 N. State St.

Santa will arrive at 11 a.m. and stay until 1 p.m.

There will be a lunch of chili or chicken and noodles available for a free-will donation.

There also will be cookie, candy and craft vendors.

People will be able to take as many pictures of Santa and their children as they want.

Proceeds will benefit the John Holmes Memorial Back to School Fair planned for next year.

People also can bring donations of socks or warm mittens to be given to children in need.

Local writer plans to attend author fair

INDIANAPOLIS — David Humphrey of Pendleton is set to sign copies of his book “Indiana’s Lost National Road” at the Indiana Historical Society’s Holiday Author Fair on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis.

Humphrey is among 70 authors participating at the free annual event.

The history center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the author fair taking place from noon to 4 p.m.

Book topics will range from biography and sports to youth historical fiction and politics.

The day of the author fair, IHS will offer free admission to the Indiana Experience and its holiday exhibit, Festival of Trees, open through Jan. 5.

Group seeks holiday volunteers

ANDERSON — Secret Families of Madison County seeks volunteers for Saturday, Dec. 1, to help families in need celebrate Christmas.

Since 2010, Secret Families has provided a Christmas gift that includes a $50 Meijer Christmas Dinner Gift Card, a Bible, a decorated Christmas tree and wrapped presents for families it has served.

The group will serve 88 families this year.

Local elementary school administration provide Secret Families with a list of families.

People must register to volunteer so they know how many people to expect and how many volunteers they still need for their four key volunteer areas. People can sign up as individuals or teams. Lunch is provided for volunteers at the group’s wrapping station.

• Shopping teams will meet at 6:30 a.m. at Meijer with 25 teams of six people needed.

• Wrapping teams will meet at Tom Wood Honda at 7:30 a.m., with 15 teams of six people needed. Wrapping can be done until all of the presents are done, or people can sign up for a shift.

• Tree delivery teams will meet at Tom Wood Honda at 9:30 a.m. with five teams of four people needed.

• Gift delivery teams will meet at Tom Wood Honda at 10:30 a.m., with 10 teams of three people needed.

Quilt guild plans meeting, party

PENDLETON — Spring Valley Quilt Guild will meet Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Mercer Family Barn, 1189 W. County Road 700S,

Pendleton, for its holiday party and final meeting of 2018.

Participants are asked to bring a dish to share at the pitch-in.

Forest Green will be the color of the month. Quilty rewards prizes will be awarded too.

There will be show and tell, and guests are welcome.

The guild meets monthly the first Wednesday each month except September. Regular meetings take place in the Community Room at Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St.

Social time starts at 5:30p.m., and meetings begin at 6 p.m.

Friends’ ready for gingerbread contest

PENDLETON — The second annual Friends of the Pendleton Community Library Gingerbread Cottage Contest is scheduled to coincide with the library’s Holiday Open House on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Cost to enter is $10. Participants will receive a gingerbread recipe, building directions and pattern pieces. Participants who pay a $20 entry fee will receive a full decorating kit.

Registration for the contest lasts through Thursday, Dec. 6. All entries must be turned in at the library on Wednesday, Dec. 5, and Thursday, Dec. 6.

There once again will be local celebrity judges, and First Merchants Bank will be the presenting sponsor.

Best in Show honors will be presented in beginner, intermediate and advanced categories, and a People’s Choice category will be judged by visitors during the open house.

Historical museum plans open house

PENDLETON — Pendleton Historical Museum plans its annual Christmas Open House for 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in Falls Park.

There will be fresh-popped popcorn, hot apple cider and holiday music performed live on dulcimers.

People also will have the chance to decorate cookies and mingle with others, and take pictures of their children with Santa.

The museum’s regular hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Pendleton Swim Club offers lessons

PENDLETON — Pendleton Swim Club plans another sessions of swim lessons, scheduled on six consecutive Saturdays.

The next session will begin in January.
