Lapel wrestlers fourth at invite, defeat Hagerstown

LAPEL — Lapel wrestlers are scheduled to be back on the wrestling mat in a home non-conference meet against Eastern Hancock at 6 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 6.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the team was at Maconaquah High School in Bunker Hill for the Maconaquah Invitational, in which Lapel finished in fourth place.

In the first match of the day, Lapel lost to Marion, the eventual champion, by a score of 39-38.

Lapel then righted the ship and won three in a row against Rossville (47-32), Tri Central (60-24) and Tipton (45-28). In the third- and fourth-place match-up, Lapel took on the host school and lost 24-57.

Undefeated wrestlers on the day for the Bulldogs included Harrison Hadley, 120 pounds, who wrestled four matches; Sparky Manis, 126 pounds, who went 5-0 (Manis also won his 100th career match that day); and Phoenix Mills, 195 pounds, who also was undefeated at 5-0.

Wrestlers with three wins included Trevor Grueter, 113 pounds; Tanner Mroz, 132 pounds; Kyle Shelton, 138 pounds; Gage Thompson, 170 pounds; and Cade Mohr, heavyweight.

Earlier last week, the Lapel wrestlers dominated in an away match at Hagerstown High School, winning 60-15.

Lapel wrestlers won all of their varsity matches by pin or forfeit.

Hadley led the way with a pin followed by Shelton (pin); Grant Morris, 152 pounds (pin); Clayton McMillan, 160 pounds (pin); Thompson (pin); Mills (pin) and Mohr (pin).

Charlie Pitcock, 126 pounds, won by forfeit, as did Manis and Killian O’Conner, 145 pounds.
