PENDLETON — Year after year, the Pendleton Heights High School boys golf team seems to have a target on its back in Madison County, and this season is no different.

Of the Arabians’ top five from last season, they lost two to graduation, but the defending Madison County champs go into this season with some experienced varsity players.

With one senior and five juniors on the Arabian roster, the team has its sights set on another title. The Arabians have won six of the last seven Madison County golf titles, and junior Austin Davis was the medalist for the event.

The Madison County meet is Saturday, May 4. Coach Scott Davis is optimistic.

“I think we’ll be fairly good. We sure would love to repeat. There are guys who didn’t play last year in the county or HHC, and it will really depend on those guys,” Davis said.

Lapel may be one of the biggest challengers for the title, as last year’s young Bulldogs team has experience behind it.

Also returning for the Arabians is the lone senior Carter Ray, as well as Wyatt Weaver and Tyler Patterson.

Not only is the Madison County race a tough one, but the Hoosier Heritage Conference is also perennially loaded with talent. The Arabians finished fourth in last year’s meet, just three strokes behind Yorktown and just seven behind champion New Castle. Pendleton Heights plays host to the HHC championship Saturday, May 11.

“We definitely have the ability,” Davis said. “Everybody is always trying to knock us off.”

The Arabians open their season April 6 with the Yorktown Invitational at the Players Club. Then they turn around and face Yorktown again April 10.

With opponents Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern between the county and conference meets, the Arabians will be tested the whole season.
