PENDLETON — Historically, the Horseshoe Classic softball tournament at Pendleton Heights draws an impressive lineup of talent, and this year was no different.

The Arabians finished fourth out of eight teams in a pool that included the second-, third- and fourth-ranked teams in the state.

After knocking off South Bend Addams 13-1 in five innings, the Arabians took on fourth-ranked Chesterton.

At the end of regulation seven innings, the score was tied at 0-0.

In the eighth, the Trojans scored and won the game 2-0.

“This was a fun game,” coach Rob Davis said. “Sometimes it comes down to who gets the breaks.”

Pendleton Heights pitcher Jordan Benefiel struck out 16 batters. The Arabians had three hits for the game.

Against No. 2-ranked Decatur Central Hawks — last year’s state champion — Pendleton Heights lost 3-1.

Grace Conkling had two hits in the game for the Arabians.

Davis praised Benefiel’s two-game effort for the day, totaling 23 strikeouts for the tournament.

“She pitched great all day, and she can do that.” Davis said the experience is good for tournament time later in the season.

“They competed, and that’s what I wanted them to do. They didn’t give up.”

The Arabians hosted Shelbyville April 6 and defeated the Golden Bears 7-0.

Kieli Ryan, Ally Hall, Kylie Davis and Grace Conkling had two hits apiece, with Conkling getting a homerun.

Benefiel got the win and had 13 strikeouts for the game.

In the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Poll for the week of April 8, the Arabians are ranked seventh in Class 4A.

Following this week’s Madison County Tournament action, Pendleton Heights is set to play host to Anderson on April 15 and Carmel on April 17
