PENDLETON — After a string of 90-plus-degree days, Pendleton on Sunday was busy with people venturing out to cool off — or to earn some cool cash.

Alvin D. Brown Memorial Swimming Pool and Fall Creek in Falls Park were popular places for people to seek out water activities.

Ciera Withrow of Pendleton said a visit to the pool with her son, Elijah, was their first time out during the recent heat wave.

She said they’ve been playing in the backyard the past few days, close to the air conditioning: “At home you can go inside whenever you want.”

Nathan Swift of Anderson was at Falls Park with his girlfriend and family. While they waded in the creek, he also said he had been staying inside during the past several days to avoid the heat.

Eleanor Stover decided the weather presented her with an opportunity: To make some money with a lemonade stand at the end of her driveway on Broadway Street.

“I set up everything, I made everything and I went to CVS to get these,” she said, pointing to a stack of cups.

Her brother, Henry, and their friend Reagan Butler walked around the neighborhood spreading the word about the sale to drum up customers.

Eleanor said she’d been busy in her first hour, serving about eight customers.

Temperatures fell sharply Sunday night but are forecast to climb back to 90 degrees by the end of this weekend.
