SOUTH MADISON COUNTY — Local churches have responded to the COVID-19 virus by turning to electronic means to spread the good word.

“We have moved all of our services online,” said Jill Sizemore, administrative assistant at Fall Creek Christian Church in Pendleton.”We have also increased our social media presence.”

The church also has started a drive-thru food pantry, from noon to 2 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

“We’ve had a food pantry before, for years, just not a drive-through one,” she said.

Donna Wood at Pendleton First United Methodist Church said the church moved Sunday services online starting Sunday as well, on the church website, YouTube and Facebook.

Wood said the church is keeping in touch with members through its database, sending messages that include Scripture and “a little story” as well as coloring pages and activities for children.

She said the church is starting a project with youth to have them make phone calls to elderly members and others “just to see how they’re doing” and whether they need anything.

“Everybody’s just hunkering down,” she said. “It’s a new way of life for us for a while. Maybe it’s a good thing, so maybe we can bond with our families and stay healthy.”
