New athletic training facility planned

PENDLETON — An indoor facility to hone baseball, softball and golf skills is in the works for Pendleton.

Cal Wilson, the head of the developing team, said the 9,600-square-feet facility, which will be located near the Pendleton Sports Complex, will include turf and nets and focus on baseball, softball training and conditioning, as well as, golf fitness.

Wilson said he sees it as a resource that would provide both private instruction and private rental.

“We’re still pretty early on in the stages,” Wilson said of the project that will be built near the town’s youth baseball and softball diamonds and soccer fields.

Wilson said he and his team are still going through the bidding process for construction as well as working on financing and other approvals.

He said he’s hopeful to have a lot of the details worked out soon.

“I feel pretty good in the next three or four weeks we’ll have a really good idea of what it’s going to look like, a timeline, and renderings,” he said.

“My family has been involved with baseball and softball (in Pendleton) a long time, and we’re still pretty heavily involved,” Wilson added.

“We saw a need for it and thought it’d be something that would be nice to partner with the parks department on and be a resource for the PJBL (Pendleton Junior Baseball League), Champions League and the football league.”

Jim Werdell of JW Hitting will provide the softball training. Ethan Wilson, selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 25th round of the 2010 draft, will offer the baseball teaching.

Pendleton Plan Commission and Pendleton Town Council approved rezoning 5 acres of land for the project, which includes plans for an 80-by-120-foot building.

“The Town of Pendleton is always pleased to be working with local residents who want to invest back into Pendleton,” town Planning Director Rachel Christenson said. “We are pleased to be working with Cal on this project and are looking forward to a successful project.”
