PENDLETON — Dozens of children and their family members competed in the annual Pendleton Lions Club Fishing Derby on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Falls Park pond.

Mike Garvey and son Reid of Fishers, who have family in Pendleton, came out to drop a line.

“Obviously, we’re looking for things to do to get out of the house,” Garvey said.

Corrine Williamson, 7, and her dad, Jay, came from the Summerlake addition to participate, and so Corrine can do more of what she does at the lake behind her house.

“I like it,” Corrine said, referring to fishing, as she fired off a powerful overhead cast into the pond.

“She’s been fishing since she’s been about a year and a half old,” Jay Williamson said. “I’m proud of her. She does a really good job.”

The Lions Club stocks the pond with hundreds of pounds of fish each year for the annual derby.

There were two competitor age groups, 2 to 8 and 9 to 13, with each group given about an hour to fish, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. respectively.

Trophies and other awards are presented, including for longest fish and most fish caught.

This year’s derby fish stock was paid for with funds donated in the name of the late Johnny Bill Owens.

Owens, who died in February, was a 1972 Pendleton Heights High School graduate, longtime employee of the Town of Pendleton, and coach of youth baseball, softball and football.

He was also the owner and operator of JB’s Bait and Tackle in Huntsville.
