5th District art contest on show

PENDLETON — The 5th District Congressional Art Competition in on display through May 24 at Pendleton Artists Society’s Gallery 119, located at 119 W. State St., Pendleton.

The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The 5th District’s Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in the district. The winning artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, along with the top piece from other participating districts nationwide.

The winning artwork also will be featured on’s Congressional Art Competition page, and the winner will receive two round-trip tickets to Washington D.C. to attend a reception and meet 5th District Congresswoman Victoria Spartz.

Lapel High School concert coming up

LAPEL — The Lapel Show Choir will present its final show of the year, a celebration of “back to normal,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 21.

Short explanations of some of the songs performed will give the audience some insight into their meaning.

A few of the songs that will be performed are Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’ from “Teen Beach Movie” and Belmont Avenue from the Broadway musical “A Bronx Tale.”

Also included in the show will be music performed by former Lapel Show Choir members.

Seniors will be honored and new members for next year will be introduced.

Admission for adults is $5 and $3 for students. Sponsors will be admitted free of charge.

Master Gardener plant/rummage sale May 14

ALEXANDRIA — Madison County Master Gardeners plans its annual plant sale along with a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14 at the 4-H Building behind Beulah Park in Alexandria.

The plants for sale are grown locally. Cash and debit and credit cards will be accepted.

Psi Phi Purse Auction

MARKLEVILLE — Psi Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority in Markleville will play host to its Purse Auction at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at North Christian Church, 32 State St., Markleville.

A portion of the proceeds will help the chapter support military veteran organizations.

Psi Phi’s personal and entertaining auctioneer Tim Looper will auction new and gently-used purses filled with surprises. Purses can be previewed at 6 p.m. (no touching), with the auction starting at 6:30 p.m.

Kids’ summer art camp set at PAS

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans Kids’ Camp 2022

for July 11-15 at Gallery 119, located at 119 W. State St.

At the camp, instructors will teach participants to create age-appropriate art with various artists.

On the last evening, participants will have a display of the art projects created during the week for the parents to see before taking them home.

There is a morning (9-11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (12:30-3 p.m.) session for students ages 6-12. Class limit for each session is 30.

An evening session for people 12 and older is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Class limit is nine.

People can register at the gallery in person or by phone 765-778-0986 during regular hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Flag diplay, honor service planned

PENDLETON — A field of more than 100 American flags will form a display from May 4-7, at the entrance to the Summerlake community, to honor all first responders, health care workers and members of the military (active and veterans).

The display will be located along State Road 13 in the yard of Grandview Church.

The community is invited to a service at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Grandview Church, on the National Day of Prayer, during which frontline workers and military will be recognized for their sacrifice and dedication.

Grandview Church is located at 9064 W. Grandview Blvd., Pendleton.

Church plans abundance meal

MARKLEVILLE — Christian Women’s Fellowship “Comfort Keepers” of the East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Markleville plan its monthly “God Abundance Meal” for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday May 11, in the lower fellowship hall.

The menu will be chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, assorted desserts,and drink. It will be dine in or take out.

The meal is open to the public, and the church, 124 Main St., is accessible to those with disabilities.

The next monthly meal is set for June 8.

Foundation creates internship

PENDLETON — South Madison Community Foundation is offering a philanthropy internship beginning in the spring

The intern will complete a sample of activities that provide a complete picture of the requirements to staff a community foundation, from account reconciliation to the design and implementation of community projects.

Specifically, the intern will:

· Provide assistance to the executive director with emphasis in enhancing community engagement and administering functions of the foundation.

· Position is estimated at 20 hours per week and $15 per hour.

· Required: Full or part time enrolled college or graduate student who has completed one year of higher education.
