MADISON COUNTY — The 21st Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Top 100 Underclass Showcase took place over the weekend.
The girls event took place June 15 at Ben Davis High School, while the boys event was June 17 at Brownsburg High School.
Staged by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association with support from the Indiana High School Athletic Association, the Underclass Showcase events are designed to give exposure to approximately 240 of the top basketball prospects from across the state (120 boys, 120 girls) to colleges across the state and nation.
Both Showcase events were conducted during the NCAA’s “scholastic viewing period,” which allows coaches from NCAA Division I programs to attend in person.
The girls showcase included the top two scorers from Lapel’s state runner-up team this past season — senior Maddy Poynter and sophomore Laniah Wills — along with Pendleton Heights’ Kaycie Warfel.
This past season, Wills averaged 15.8 points and 12.4 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs, and Poynter averaged 11.5 points.
The duo helped lead Lapel to a 22-8 record, a Madison County championship, a sectional championship, a regional championship, and a semistate championship.
The trip to the state finals was the first in school history, and the regional title was the first since 2007.
An incoming sophomore, Wills has already received Division I offers from Bradley University and Indiana State University.
Poynter has received offers from Grace College, Taylor University and Trine University.
Warfel was the Arabians’ leading scorer a season ago. She averaged 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.0 steals per game. The Arabians finished the season 15-10 and were runners-up in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.
The boys showcase included Lapel’s Brode and Bode Judge, and Pendleton Heights’ Josiah Gustin.
The Judge brothers were the top two scorers for Lapel. Brode averaged 14 points, and Bode averaged 10.5. The Bulldogs ended the year 12-13.
Gustin led the Arabians in scoring with 13.3 points per game, and added 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. Pendleton Heights ended the year 8-17.
Gustin has received Division I offers from Northern Kentucky and Mercer, along with NAIA school Indiana Wesleyan.
Coaches from Indiana, Purdue, Kansas, Michigan, Auburn, Indiana State, Cincinnati and Butler, among others, were on hand to watch the boys showcase.
