MADISON COUNTY — The 15th Annual Indiana Basketball All-Star Classic is a preview of what to expect in the 2023–24 boys and girls high school basketball seasons.
With a change of format this year, all players participating were underclassmen this past season.
In previous years, the classic had included games of graduating seniors and contests that featured standout returning players.
Three of south Madison County’s top girls basketball players were at this year’s event, which took place June 17 at Anderson University.
Rising senior Maddy Poynter and rising sophomore Laniah Wills represented Lapel, while rising junior Kaycie Warfel represented Pendleton Heights.
There were four games each on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s boys games were for the graduating classes of 2024, 2025, and 2026. The girls games were on Saturday. Each day, there were two games of rising seniors and two games of combined rosters for the rising juniors and rising sophomores.
Familiar county foes, Wills and Warfel faced off against one another in game No. 4. The pair split regular-season matchups, with Lapel defeating the Arabians 42-38 in the Madison County Championship, and the Arabians getting revenge with a 60-54 win just a few weeks later.
This time, it was Wills and team red earning the victory versus Warfel and team white by a score of 64-56.
Warfel scored 12 points, along with four rebounds and two steals. Wills scored six points, and added 10 rebounds and a block.
The game was Warfel’s second time competing in the all-star classic. Last year, she scored seven points, had four rebounds, and three steals.
Poynter was scheduled to play in the first game but was under the weather and didn’t play.
