3-D show, Mona Lisa reveal and more

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society’s First Friday event, set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, will have a couple of extra components to it this month at Gallery 119 in Pendleton.

PAS will have 3-D art on display for its August show.

Judge for the event is Pat Nelson, who will be announcing the winners of the show at 7 p.m.

The public will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Winners will receive: First Place — $70, Second Place — $40, Third Place — $30 and People’s Choice — $20.

The show is sponsored by Robin and Garry Brammer.

Also for August:

• The Muncie Artists Guild will be our special feature for August.

• Anderson artist Patrick Kluesner will unveil his painting of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa at 6:30 p.m. Painted in multiple layers of color that result in a smoky authentic “chiaroscuro” look. It represents years of study and a life- long fascination with Renaissance artists’ working methods.

•PAS Chair Affair also will kick off during the First Friday event.

Chairs were donated by Anita’s Kitchen. Artists prepared the chairs for painting and have put artwork on them to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for PAS. Winning bids will be announced at the Pendleton Fall Festival at 3 p.m. Sept. 9. More information to follow after the kick off for online bidding.

The artists society also offers art classes on tap for August, including:

• Pottery with Janae Ledbetter (ages 12 and older) — 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8, 15 and 22, and Sept. 12. Participants will explore pottery, including hand-building techniques and throwing on the pottery wheel.

The cost is $120 for the four sessions. Supplies are included.

Children’s Art Classes take place on the second Saturday each month. Classes are taught by a variety of teachers. Each class is independent and will need its own registration.

The next children’s class is:

• Art Deco Clay with Pam Rowley — 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12. Rowley will guide children in making a Deco Clay (a lightweight air-dry clay) bear.

Cost is $10.

Legion plans activities

PENDLETON — American Legion Post 117, 611 W. State St., Pendleton, plans the following events — open to members and non-members:

• Karaoke with DJ Dec — 8 to 11 p.m. Aug., 4, 11 and 18

• Live Band — 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 25

• All-you-can-eat breakfast — 7:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 19

Other regular Legion events include:

• All-you-can-eat wing night is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Thursdays, with all-you-can-eat wings costing $12

• Lunch specials (as well as regular menu) — starting at 11 a.m. weekdays

• Treasure Hunt drawing takes place at 7:30 p.m. Fridays

• Pool on Sunday — beginning at noon, no charge

People interested in playing on a tournament euchre team or pool team should call or stop by the post and talk to Dave or Haley.

The Legion’s general membership meeting is set for 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday each month.

Public is welcome. Facility is smoke-free.

Duck race organizers seek helpers

PENDLETON — Volunteers are needed to help with the 10th annual Lucky Duck Race in Falls Park this summer.

The event — which is run by Friends of the Pendleton Community Library and benefits library programs — is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9; helpers are needed on race day as well as at certain times prior.

Volunteers will work with members of the event team, and those interested should send an email with name and phone number to [email protected].

Specific volunteer times include:

8 a.m. to noon Aug. 12 — Farmers market booth at Falls Park

8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 19 — Ohanalulu’s Donuts & Ice Cream, 106 W. State Street

1 to 4 p.m. — Aug. 27 Pendleton Safety Day, Pendleton Fire Station Duck Adoption Booth

Lions’ concert series continues July 30

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Lions Club Concerts in the Park Series wraps up with a performance by Pendleton Heights High School Marching Arabians and Madison County Band Directors’ Orchestra on Aug. 27.

The show is set to start at 6 p.m. near the gazebo in Pendleton’s Falls Park.

There is no admission charge, refreshments are available, and people can bring their own lawn chairs and shade umbrellas.

Jamboree on the horizon

MARKLEVILLE — Markleville Jamboree is set for Aug. 4-6, at Markleville Community Park.

Festivities begin on Wednesday and continue through Saturday.

There will be food, games, pageants, tractor rides and live entertainment.

Psi Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Markleville, will play host to its annual Homemade Chicken & Noodle Dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at the park shelter house. Homemade chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, desserts, and iced tea or lemonade cost $10 for those 11 and older, $5 for those aged 3 to 10, and no charge for children younger than 3.

The park is located on State Road 38 just west of downtown.

Markleville Tractor pull Aug. 6

MARKLEVILLE — Markeville Tractor Pull will be conducted by the Peavler family for the last time on Aug. 6, at 2649 State Road 38, Markleville.

Scales open at 10 a.m. and pull starts at noon.

BOOST stock tractors needing info call Mike Hodupp. Division 2 and 3 classes start at 4000 thru 7000.Top cuts are 3 and 5 mph. Full cuts are 6, 8 and 12 mph. Open speed for both cuts at 5250. Jackpot classes 4750 and 5750 for both cuts.

Hook fees are $20 for regular and open speed classes. Hook fees for Jackpot classes $25. Payback at 50% for all classes. Classes added as wanted by pullers.

Talks explore county’s history

ANDERSON — Madison County Historical Society Inc. offers a series of “First Sunday” presentations covering the History of Madison County, set for 2 p.m. monthly in the Bowman Room at Museum of Madison County History, 11 W. 11th St., Anderson.

Madison County Historian Stephen T. Jackson delivers the presentations, which provide an overview of Madison County’s history through historical highlights.

Presentations run about an hour each and are free.

Following the presentation, at about 3 p.m., Jackson will sign his book “Historic Events in a County Called Madison: The 20th Century.” This book and others

will be available to purchase.

The remaining talks are set for:

Sept. 3: Duck Creek Township

Oct. 1: Stony Creek Township

Nov. 5: Madison County

• The historical society presents “A Night On The Titanic” at 7 p.m. Monday, July 24. Seating for this session is booked to capacity. Reservations are now being accepted for a second session, planned for 7 p.m. Oct. 23. Reservations are required by Oct. 20.

Church group plans abundance meal

MARKLEVILLE — Christian Women’s Fellowship “Comfort Keepers” of East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 124 E. Main St. in Markleville (East State Road 38), plans its monthly “God Abundance Meal” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the lower fellowship hall of the church.

Menu will be chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, assorted desserts and drink.

Dine in or carry out.

The facility is accessible to people with disabilities.

ParkFest set for Sept. 7

PENDLETON — Stella Luna and the Satellites will perform at the annual ParkFest concert fundraiser for Falls Park, set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Barnhart Field in Pendleton’s Falls Park.

The event is BYOP — bring your own picnic. People are invited to bring food, drink, chairs and blankets. A BYOP contest will award prizes for the best decorated space.

Also returning this year: Chalk the Walk contest.

Tickets for people 11 and older cost $15 and are available at https://event.ontaptickets.com/events/parkfest-2023-in-pendleton-in-9-7-2023. A “FestPack” package of four tickets costs $50. (Click the blue ‘Packages Available’ button at the website.)

There is no entry fee for those 10 and younger.

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights High School Class of 1978 is planning its 45th reunion for Sept. 16.
