3-D show, chair auction and more

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society will have its 3-D art show entries and winners on display during August at Gallery 119 in Pendleton.

Also, the Muncie Artists Guild will be the society’s special feature for August.

PAS Chair Affair also is taking place.

Chairs were donated by Anita’s Kitchen. Artists prepared the chairs for painting and have put artwork on them to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for PAS. Winning bids will be announced at the Pendleton Fall Festival at 3 p.m. Sept. 9. More information to follow after the kick off for online bidding.

The artists society also offers art classes on tap for August, including:

• Pottery with Janae Ledbetter (ages 12 and older) — 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8, 15 and 22, and Sept. 12. Participants will explore pottery, including hand-building techniques and throwing on the pottery wheel.

The cost is $120 for the four sessions. Supplies are included.

Children’s Art Classes take place on the second Saturday each month. Classes are taught by a variety of teachers. Each class is independent and will need its own registration.

The next children’s class is:

• Art Deco Clay with Pam Rowley — 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12. Rowley will guide children in making a Deco Clay (a lightweight air-dry clay) bear.

Cost is $10.

Legion plans activities

PENDLETON — American Legion Post 117, 611 W. State St., Pendleton, plans the following events — open to members and non-members:

• Karaoke with DJ Dec — 8 to 11 p.m. Aug. 11 and 18

• Live Band — 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 25

• All-you-can-eat breakfast — 7:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 19

Other regular Legion events include:

• All-you-can-eat wing night is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Thursdays, with all-you-can-eat wings costing $12

• Lunch specials (as well as regular menu) — starting at 11 a.m. weekdays

• Treasure Hunt drawing takes place at 7:30 p.m. Fridays

• Pool on Sunday — beginning at noon, no charge

People interested in playing on a tournament euchre team or pool team should call or stop by the post and talk to Dave or Haley.

The Legion’s general membership meeting is set for 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday each month.

Playground celebration set

PENDLETON — The grand opening of the new Falls Park playground is set for Friday, Aug. 18, at the corner of Water Street and Pendleton Avenue.

There will be entertainment from 5 to 7 p.m., food trucks and booths, with a 5:15 p.m. ribbon cutting.

The event follows a 4:15 p.m. reveal of the Madison County Bicentennial Mural (near the Falls).

The new playground will be open to use.

Duck race organizers seek helpers

PENDLETON — Volunteers are needed to help with the 10th annual Lucky Duck Race in Falls Park this summer.

The event — which is run by Friends of the Pendleton Community Library and benefits library programs — is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9; helpers are needed on race day as well as at certain times prior.

Volunteers will work with members of the event team, and those interested should send an email with name and phone number to [email protected].

Specific volunteer times include:

Lions’ concert series continues July 30

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Lions Club Concerts in the Park Series wraps up with a performance by Pendleton Heights High School Marching Arabians and Madison County Band Directors’ Orchestra on Aug. 27.

The show is set to start at 6 p.m. near the gazebo in Pendleton’s Falls Park.

There is no admission charge, refreshments are available, and people can bring their own lawn chairs and shade umbrellas.

Talks explore county’s history

ANDERSON — Madison County Historical Society Inc. offers a series of “First Sunday” presentations covering the History of Madison County, set for 2 p.m. monthly in the Bowman Room at Museum of Madison County History, 11 W. 11th St., Anderson.

Madison County Historian Stephen T. Jackson delivers the presentations, which provide an overview of Madison County’s history through historical highlights.

Presentations run about an hour each and are free.

Following the presentation, at about 3 p.m., Jackson will sign his book “Historic Events in a County Called Madison: The 20th Century.” This book and others

will be available to purchase.

The remaining talks are set for:

Oct. 1: Stony Creek Township

• The historical society presents “A Night On The Titanic” at 7 p.m. Monday, July 24. Seating for this session is booked to capacity. Reservations are now being accepted for a second session, planned for 7 p.m. Oct. 23. Reservations are required by Oct. 20.

Church group plans abundance meal

MARKLEVILLE — Christian Women’s Fellowship “Comfort Keepers” of East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 124 E. Main St. in Markleville (East State Road 38), plans its monthly “God Abundance Meal” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, in the lower fellowship hall of the church.

Menu will be chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, assorted desserts and drink.

Dine in or carry out.

The facility is accessible to people with disabilities.

ParkFest set for Sept. 7

PENDLETON — Stella Luna and the Satellites will perform at the annual ParkFest concert fundraiser for Falls Park, set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Barnhart Field in Pendleton’s Falls Park.

The event is BYOP — bring your own picnic. People are invited to bring food, drink, chairs and blankets. A BYOP contest will award prizes for the best decorated space.

Also returning this year: Chalk the Walk contest.

Tickets for people 11 and older cost $15 and are available at https://event.ontaptickets.com/events/parkfest-2023-in-pendleton-in-9-7-2023. A “FestPack” package of four tickets costs $50. (Click the blue ‘Packages Available’ button at the website.)

There is no entry fee for those 10 and younger.
