Lapel tennis downs Triton Central, Tipton

TIPTON — The Lapel season-long road trip while their courts are being resurfaced continued this week with visits to Triton Central and Tipton. After dropping a match Monday to Pendleton Heights, the Bulldogs bounced back with convincing wins Tuesday and Wednesday.

Top singles players Maddie Shannon and Lauren Benagh and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Tonya Riffey and Emma Bush rolled to wins both days to lead the Bulldogs to consecutive 4-1 team wins.

Against Triton, Shannon defeated Sam Felling 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 match, while Benagh dominated Hannah Duncan in the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-0. Bush and Riffey battled deep into a third set before prevailing over Gabby Mahurin and Abi Eck 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

The No. 2 doubles team of Makena Mason and Zoe Freer secured a fourth point for Lapel with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win over Amelia Hough and Emily LeMasters. The lone point for Triton was in the No. 3 singles match when Rachel Heurmann knocked off Lapel’s Hannah Chinn 7-5, 6-1.

The following day, Shannon and Benagh were even more thorough in their wins. Shannon routed Caroline Ankrum 6-1, 6-1, and Benagh whitewashed Mary Ankrum 6-0, 6-0.

Riffey and Bush started a second-straight doubles sweep with a 6-0, 7-5 win against Anne Alexander and Cassidy Clifford, while Alyssa Whaley and Emily Eppert took care of Haley Davis and Kaitlyn Williams in the No. 2 doubles match 6-3, 6-0.

Makenzie Richards dropped the No. 3 singles match for Lapel to Lynnae Long 5-7, 4-6.

Lapel (6-3) travels to Noblesville today before taking part in Saturday’s South Dearborn Invitational, where they hope to defend their championship from a year ago.
