MARION–The Lapel tennis team faced an early test ahead of next week’s Madison County tournament and, thanks to a singles sweep, came home with a second straight win to start the season.
Senior No. 1 singles Joseph Conrad and sophomore No. 2 singles Jesse McCurdy dropped just one game combined as Lapel collected a 3-2 win in Marion against the Giants Tuesday evening.
Conrad blanked Stephen Johnson 6-0, 6-0 while McCurdy routed Vikkram Orranduj 6-1, 6-0. Senior Austin Lyons also won easily in the No. 3 singles match, knocking off Jay Faucher 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for Lapel (2-0).
The Giants took both doubles matches as Jonathon Walts and Noah Lyons defeated Zach Krebs and Reid Ratzlaff in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-0 and Ross Hagen and Noah Wolfgang dropped the No. 2 match to Ethan Elzroth and Caleb Spitzer 6-7 (5-7), 4-6.
Lapel will host Elwood Tuesday at 5 p.m. before getting the county tournament started by taking on Madison-Grant at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
