LAPEL — Lunch prices are set in preparation for the first day of the new school year at Frankton-Lapel Community Schools — Thursday, Aug. 9, a day after educators have a back-to-school work day set.

These upcoming dates were discussed, as were the graduation date for the classes of 2019 and the hiring of personnel, including an assistant principal at Lapel High School, during recent school board meetings.

The board approved a lunch price increase, which was required by the National School Lunch Program. The new student lunch prices for the 2018-19 school year are $2.35 for elementary school students and $2.50 for Lapel junior and senior high school students. Breakfast prices are $1.60 for all age groups.

The board also approved the food bids for bread and milk for 2018-19 and agreed to purchase food and supplies through the bid process of the West Central Indiana Educational Service Center.

District officials also approved the federal school nutrition program with the Indiana Department of Education for the 2018-19 school year. The program helps administrators make sure they follow federal nutritional guidelines.

Board members also approved hiring educators at Lapel High School: Matt Boles was hired as the new assistant principal, Scott Page was hired as the new dual credit chemistry/physics teacher, and Jeffrey Johnson was hired as the dual credit biology teacher.

The district also has hired Carly Taylor to teach kindergarten at Lapel Elementary School and Christy Couch to teach English at Lapel Middle School.

Also on the personnel front, the board approved the resignation of a Lapel Elementary School second-grade teacher Andrea Allison. She leaves the district after four years of service.

The Lapel High School golf team received a gift of $1,700 from Pendleton Tire. The plan is to use the money to purchase 10 new golf bags for the teams.

While the 2018-19 school year is just starting, district leaders set the graduation date for the classes of 2019.

The board approved a as June 2, 2019, graduation date for Frankton and Lapel high schools, with specific times to be determined later.
