PENDLETON — Organizers and visitors to a Volunteer Expo Thursday, Aug. 16, at Gallery 119 in Pendleton said the event — which attracted dozens of visitors and included live music, a spread of food and an artist demonstration— was a success.

Tammy Bowman, executive director of the South Madison Community Foundation, an expo sponsor, said 45 people registered online to attend the fair, and more than that turned out.

Eighteen organizations — including Friends of the Pendleton Library, Pendleton Historic Museum, Pendleton Log Cabin Project, YMCA and More Than Conquerors — had tables set up with informational displays and representatives ready to answer questions.

Bowman said she was happy with how many people showed a genuine interest to get involved with local events and efforts.

For instance, she said, a man and his adult daughter came in “looking for something they could do together.”

Another duo, Joe and Dawn Deckards, who have lived in Pendleton for just a month and are starting a new location of church in town, said they were happy there was an event that brought so many community groups together.

“We wanted to volunteer. We were told to come to this event if we wanted to meet some people,” Joe Deckard said.

“This would have taken us years” to make as many connections, Dawn Deckard said.

Leadership Academy of Madison County alumni worked with the community foundation and others to arrange the event, which took place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the gallery, home to Pendleton Artists Society, which also had a table at the event.
