Arabians girls hoops third at county

PENDLETON — In a 47-21 rout, the Pendleton Heights girls basketball team finished with third-place honors in the Madison County tournament over Liberty Christian at Alexandria-Monroe High School on Friday, Jan. 4.

Megan Mills topped all scorers with 14 points, while Leonie Wilson went perfect from the three-point arc and free-throw line to end with 11 points.

The Arabians held the Lions to single-digit scoring in all four quarters of the game and outscored them with double digits in every period.

On Jan. 3, Pendleton Heights fell to rival Anderson 70-52.

The Arabians kept pace with the Indians initially, ending the first quarter tied 11-11, but were down 26-18 at the end of the first half.

“We just weren’t our best today,” coach Chad Cook said.

There was no stopping Anderson’s Staisha Hamilton as she knocked in 27 points for the Indians and shut down the Arabians’ current leading scorer Kailyn Graham. The team’s top gun, Aubree Dwiggins, is sidelined with an injury.

Cook acknowledged the loss of Dwiggins was difficult, but he hopes she will be able to be on the court later.

He praised the return of Megan Mills.

“It’s real important for us she played and was tough on the boards. It’s good to see her back and healthy for the home stretch.”

With the county tournament wrapped up for 2019, the Arabians (11-7) play host to New Palestine at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11.
