School board member steps down

PENDLETON — Mark Brizendine, who is in the process of moving out of Fall Creek Township, resigned his position on the South Madison Community School Corp. board.

The board accepted Brizendine’s resignation at the Feb. 6 board meeting.

“Mr. Brizendine has done an outstanding job while serving on the Board of School Trustees for South Madison Community School Corporation,” Superintendent Joe Buck said. “He has been an excellent board member, and he definitely will be missed. The board and I hate to see him leave, but we wish him well with his future plans.”

During his time on the board, Brizendine was instrumental during the planning phase and the construction of the activity center and the renovation of and improvements to Pendleton Heights High School, including construction of a wrestling, locker room, and weight room addition.

Brizendine had been a member of the board since July 2017, when he was appointed by the board to replace Terry Auker, who had resigned.

Interested applicants are to submit a letter of interest and application to Buck at 203 S. Heritage Way, Pendleton, IN 46064, by 3:30 p.m. Feb. 21. Candidates must be 21 or older and live in Fall Creek Township.

The board will appoint a replacement to fulfill Brizendine’s term, which expires Dec. 31.

School awards

Eric Schill, principal at Pendleton Elementary Primary School, and Arlene Bennett, principal at Pendleton Elementary Intermediate School, recognized their schools Academic Spotlight Awards at the Thursday, Feb. 6 school board meeting.

Students recognized, as part of the school systems Character Counts program, were Corbyn Armour (respect), Henry Basch (fairness), Ryder Garner (responsibility), Kenzington Kanitz (caring), Jacob Eldridge (citizenship) and Camden Saxon (trustworthiness).

PEPS also recognized Jill Allred as its Non-Certified Staff Above and Beyond honoree.

Main Street Pendleton, represented by executive director Jack Wilson, also was acknowledged with the Community Partner Award.

PEIS acknowledged Adrienne Mills as recipient of its Non-Certified staff Above and Beyond award, as well as, recognizing Heather Webster with the Community Partner Award.

Approvals

Along with approving the resignation of Brizendine, the board approved the resignations of Pendleton Elementary Primary School Special Education instructional assistant Jeraldine Waller, East Elementary School instructional assistant Amber Tipmore, Maple Ridge Elementary School RTI instructional assistant Jennifer Sumski and East Special Education instructional assistant Allison Nixon. The board also approved the termination of Pendleton Heights Middle School part-time custodian Austin Keesling,

Recommendations were approved for East instructional assistant Venessa Dwyer, East Special Education instructional assistant Larissa Hodson, Pendleton Elementary Primary Preschool special education instructional assistant Crystal Kopp, Pendleton Heights Middle School Beginning Band Lauren Lavy and Pendleton Heights High School boys assistant swim coach Luke Wihebrink.

A trip request was approved for Pendleton Elementary Intermediate sixth grade class to Flat Rock YMCA Camp for April 7-8.
