HANCOCK COUNTY — An Ingalls man died Saturday morning after the motorcycle he was riding left the road and crashed.

William Davis, 78, was later pronounced dead at an Indianapolis hospital. The accident occurred about 11 a.m. Saturday in the 10000 block of North State Road 9 near the Hancock/Madison county line.

Davis was traveling south on State Road 9 when the 2007 Honda motorcycle veered off the road for unknown reasons, said Capt. Robert Harris, public information officer for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Davis, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle, struck a street sign and ended up in a grassy area, Harris said.

An off-duty firefighter witnessed the crash and stopped to help. The victim was taken by helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators do not believe speed, drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing by members of the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team.

Officials from the sheriff’s department, Fortville Police Department, Vernon Township Fire Department and Greenfield Fire Territory also responded.
