Arabians trio win HHC track and field titles

FORTVILLE — The highest.

The farthest.

The fastest.

Pendleton Heights girls and boys track and field teams picked up individual titles during the Hoosier Heritage Conference track and field championships at Mt. Vernon High School.

In the May 11 girls meet, Arabians sophomore Isabelle Simons won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 4 inches.

At the boys meet on Thursday, May 13, Pendleton Heights senior Andrew Harvey set two HHC records in victories in the shot put and discus.

Harvey won the shot with a distance of 58 feet, 2 inches. In the discus, he had a throw of 182 feet, 9 inches, nearly 26 feet farther than the second-place finisher.

Junior Avry Carpenter took the top spot in both the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run. He broke the tape in 4:30.33 in the 1,600, while crossing the finish line in 10:01.94 to take the 3,200.

All heights, distances and times were personal records.

Both of Harvey’s throws were school records.

Simons’ height is second-best in school history, just two inches shy of the school record of 5-6, set by Marisa Marshall (2018).

As a team, Pendleton Heights boys placed second behind Mt. Vernon. The Marauders won with 156 points. PH followed with 96.

The Arabians boys had two other runnerup finishes. Caden McClain was second in the high jump at 6 feet even. The 3,200 relay team of Kyle Drinkut, Will Coggins, Andrew Blake and Taylor Skalon placed second with a time of 8:38.23.

Drinkut was third in the 800 (2:06.29). Coggins was fourth in 3,200 (10:16.32). The 400 relay team of Luke Bays, Cooper Cochran, Layne Richardson and McClain added a fourth-place finish with a time of 45.53 seconds.

Other team scores for the boys event, included, from third to eighth, Delta 92, Yorktown 75, Greenfield-Central 73, New Palestine 61, New Castle 58 and Shelbyville 13.

In the girls meet, Pendleton Heights placed seventh with a score of 47. Mt. Vernon edged New Palestine 113-112 to win the championship.

Following Simons, the 400-meter relay team of Alivia Fox, Emma Konkle, Maddie Terrell and Layla Jones finished third with a time of 53.98 seconds. Maddie Heineman placed third in the pole vault, clearing 9-feet. Sophomore Kaitlyn Prickett was fourth in the 400 dash (1:05.68).

Other team scores included, Yorktown 89.5, New Castle 82, Greenfield-Central 76, Delta 69.5 and Shelbyville 35.

The girls team was scheduled to compete Tuesday, May 18, at the Pendleton Heights Sectional. The top three finishers in each event and relay will advance to the Ben Davis Regional (Tuesday, May 25) along with participants that reach qualifying standard times, distances and heights.

The boys sectional is set for Thursday, May 20, at Mt. Vernon High School. Start time is 5:30 p.m. Regional competition is May 27 at Lawrence Central High School.
